Some Kenyan athletes with itchy fingers did not only steal and damage hotel property at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani, but also took their thieving ways to the ongoing 11th All-Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo, The Nairobian can reveal.
Gordon Oluoch, the Chef De Mission at the games said: “I have received reports that several Kenyans have left with duvets and towels from the games’ village in Brazzaville. The manager of our block is compiling the list of the rooms affected and the people who were listed under those rooms. “The Kenyan government is under obligation to pay for the things that are stolen. That is why I will remain behind after everybody has left here. It is unfortunate that our people are stealing things that they can afford, and that are available in Nairobi even in second hand shops. Some people who finished their business here chose to take with them Congolese property.
It is a shame.” In incidents that have left Team Kenya officials reeling with embarrassment, the athletes stuffed valuables into their bags, stole hotel room items and carelessly destroyed expensive fixtures during their closed door camp and training at Kasarani ahead of the Brazzaville games held from September 4 to 19. Anthony Kariuki the Deputy Chef de Mission said: “We lost three towels and four keys at Kasarani. Each towel is worth Sh3,000. Losing keys means you have to change the whole lock, which is approximately Sh10,000. We know the players whose rooms were affected and one of them has surrendered the towel here in Brazzaville.
We shall surcharge them by deducting the amounts from their allowances.” Raki Asman, the Public Relations Officer for Sports Kenya, the body which manages Kasarani Stadium, told The Nairobian that the theft of towels has become so rampant that the stadia management body is now worried.
