On Friday, three people died after inhaling fumes as they scooped petrol from an overturned tanker in a culvert near Kipkarren Town on the Eldoret-Webuye road.
Police from Lugari Sub-County were at the scene trying to keep away crowds rushing with plastic containers to scoop the petrol.
Western Regional Police Chief Moses Ombati said the three unidentified men had entered the tunnel but collapsed after inhaling petrol fumes.
A fourth victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The bodies of the three people were retrieved from the tunnel.
Police at the scene had a hectic time battling crowds surging to scoop the petrol.
Mr Ombati asked the public to keep away from the scene to avoid further loss of life due to the possibility of a fire outbreak as a result of the spilled petrol.
“We are appealing to the public to keep away from the scene of the accident and avoid stoning police who are busy trying to get the situation under control,” said Mr Ombati.
