On top of being voted Africa’s Best Airline earlier this year, Ethiopian Airlines’ image is getting cooler and cooler, thanks to some innovative entrepreneurship by an Addis Ababa businessman.
After an initial investment of 30 million birr (US$1.5 million) to buy, refurbish and decorate the Being 737, Guttama Gutta had to wait for 2 years of construction before he opened doors to the new “aircraft hotel” in Burayu, 15km west of the capital Addis Ababa.

When asked why he wanted to set up an aircraft restaurant in the town, he explained that his intention was to upgrade his previous business and by doing so the aircraft business came up.
He also added that he made the investment in the hope of creating a recreational centre in Burayu.

While adapting the aircraft for its new purpose, Ethiopian Airlines also came to the party by donating paintings and decorative items.
The engine-less aircraft is said to provide both indoor and outdoor service where the Boeing 737 aircraft will host 60 individuals at a time for food and drinks.
