The alleged coup plotters, who attacked the presidential palace while Jammeh was outside the country, were led by an ex-army captain named Lamin Sanneh, the officer said from Bissau, adding that three were killed and one was captured.
The government has however denied that it was a coup plot.
Gunfire erupted around the presidential palace in Gambia's capital Banjul overnight.
Soldiers blocked the bridge leading to the centre of the coastal city amid media reports of an attempted coup.
